Dusk is falling as I cross the Ruhr on the Konrad Adenauer Bridge. The river is still carrying a fair amount of water, so it is questionable whether the path through the Holthauser Ruhraue is clear. It is not just the less tempting alternatives that lead me into the floodplain, the path is clear and I can enjoy the proximity to the river once again at blue hour. And then I treat myself to a break.

ATTENTION! The city of Essen will renovate the former railway bridge between Kupferdreh and Heisingen. The viewing platforms are already blocked off with BARRIERS. The wooden structure is dilapidated. The old railway bridge is an important connection for cyclists and pedestrians who want to go from Heisingen to Kupferdreh or vice versa. The next option for crossing the Ruhr is the new Kampmann Bridge, 600 metres further north. A detour that many people don't necessarily want to take. As a rule, bridges are examined closely every six years. If the bridge is renovated, it must be completely closed - this is a really major project including corrosion protection of the steel structure, which takes around 2 years; the city of Essen may plan to build a replacement bridge next to the old bridge. There were two bridges there until 1945 anyway. It would even be possible to keep both bridges permanently. Then pedestrians could use one bridge and cyclists the other bridge.

Beautiful reservoir, but very crowded and busy on weekends when the weather is good.
