A beautiful view in both directions across the Spree River to Schöneweide. Among other things, the old industrial buildings are visible. Incidentally, the name "Kaisersteg" (Emperor's Bridge) in Berlin-Schöneweide is a reminder of the time of German Emperor Wilhelm II. Back then, a pedestrian bridge already existed at this location to transport workers from the burgeoning industrial plants, such as the Oberspree Cable Works (KWO) and the AEG factories, to their workplaces. The current bridge is a modern successor to this historic connection across the Spree.

Unfortunately, the new bridge, built in 2007, bears no resemblance whatsoever to the original. The delicate iron truss structure, designed by Heinrich Müller-Breslau (one of the leading structural engineers of his time), was blown up in the final days of World War II and was considered one of the most significant achievements of engineering around 1900. The Kaulsdorf Ponds lie there like a promise no one has spoken aloud – and precisely for that reason, they keep it. Between new housing developments, allotment gardens, and supermarket parking lots, a remnant of a world flickers here, where the water still seems to know where it comes from. You don't have to look far: a few steps off the asphalt, and you're standing on the shore, where the sky is reflected in the pond, as if secretly peering down. The air smells of grass, of warm mud, and that quiet something that cities don't know: a peace that isn't empty, but filled – with birdcalls, the flight of dragonflies, and the rustling of grass stalks. Every now and then, a fish surfaces, making a sound like a wet dash. Swans swim in their laps as if they had a lifetime lease on the idyll. It's hard to believe that sewage farms once lay here – places where the city disposed of its waste. Today, however, everything is softened: a biotope that has slowly found itself, with the help of time, patience, and a few clever hands. It's a place that wants nothing – and that's precisely what makes it so soothing. If you sit down on the bench on the north bank, take off your shoes, and let everyday life slide into the grass, you might sense it: this city has places of retreat that don't have to shout loudly. They whisper – and those who listen return more quietly. And a little bit reconciled.

The Wuhle hiking trail is probably one of the most beautiful trails in Berlin.
