It's good to take a break sometimes.

Hotels for Trees is a non-profit foundation established in May 2021. Hotels for Trees started in the Netherlands and has rapidly expanded across Europe since 2022. A separate entity has been established for Australia and North America. More than 1% of all CO2 emissions on our planet are caused by the hotel industry and the travel, services, and deliveries associated with it (source). More specifically, 2023 research showed that a single hotel stay can produce as much as 152.2 kg of CO2, depending on the country you visit (source). Fortunately, a growing number of hotels and meeting venues are offering their guests and bookers the opportunity to offset (part of) this CO2 in an accessible and transparent way. This is a welcome development, as there is a growing need for this, especially in the post-COVID-19 world.

Degerseestuben, a must-stop. Very, very friendly and delicious food. Nice little beach.

Very good food at the Gasthaus Seerose!

In addition to the larger, more well-known Degerseebad with its restaurant, there's another, smaller lido with a kiosk across the street. There, you also have to pay the entrance fee, and then the barrier opens. Here, on the lawn, it's quieter.

Unfortunately, a sign indicates that swimming is prohibited at this spot (see photos, as of 14 August 2025).

At the castle complex, first mentioned in 1152 and built by the Lords of Summerau, of which remnants of the keep still remain, only a few walls offer a place to rest. A staircase from the inner courtyard leads down to a well-preserved vaulted cellar. The view from the former hilltop castle, which consisted of an outer castle and a 28-meter-long and 14-meter-wide main castle, which was inhabited until its destruction in the Thirty Years' War, has long since been overgrown.
