The JU 52 probably crashed into the Watzmann massif at the end of October 1940. Thanks to the record summer, the wreckage that had been buried in the snow for a long time - including a propeller and an airplane engine - has now been uncovered on the second highest German mountain (2713 meters). According to Munich newspapers, six soldiers were killed in the accident. Their bodies were recovered and buried in a military cemetery. The wreckage gradually disappeared under a blanket of snow.
