Martinsberg Castle Site On the rugged rocky slopes above the Laber Valley, an ancient church dedicated to St. Martin still stood in 1593. No historical records exist of the unnamed castle site, but it was likely the ancestral seat of the Lords of Laaber and the predecessor of Laaber Castle, built around 1200. It stood above the royal road, known since the early 11th century, which ran along the Black Laber Valley and connected the royal palaces in Regensburg, Nuremberg, Forchheim, and Bamberg. Like the other early castles along the Black Laber (Stifterfelsen, Egelsburg, Dirkelmühle, and Eselburg), its primary function was probably to protect and control this important long-distance route. After the route shifted to the Swabian Alb plateau in the late 12th century, the castle lost its significance. The hilltop castle measured approximately 160 meters in length and up to 50 meters in width. The outer bailey was secured to the hinterland by a slope and a large, almost semicircular rampart with a ditch up to 2.5 meters deep. The eastern section, including the rampart and ditch, lies exposed. A pine grove covers the western part. A cistern was constructed on the southeast slope, leaving behind a ravine almost 4 meters deep. The inner ward occupied the westernmost point of Martinsberg hill and offers a particularly impressive view.
