The Ruttel Mill: In Ruttel stands the only windmill in Germany that still saws wood. A steady creaking sound is the sign that the Ruttel Mill is in operation. "Wind force four - that's not enough for the sawmill, but it is enough for the grinding process," says master miller Peter Egenhoff. The blades of the almost 160-year-old gallery windmill cut evenly through the wind. Gerrit Stegemann attaches a sack of grain to an iron chain. The cable winch pulls and carries the grain directly to the second floor. The chain clatters, then a wooden hatch opens. The miller shoulders the sack and tips its contents into a funnel above the millstone. Tock, tock, tock, tock - the gears mesh faster. The wind is blowing gustily from the northeast. Grain by grain, the grain falls into the grinding process. It smells almost like a bakery. In good wind conditions, the mill produces 150 to 200 packages of flour per hour.

The Stapeler Moor, with its nearly 2-kilometer-long peatland discovery trail, is definitely worth a visit. When we were there, we were alone, and the trail was easily navigable by bicycle. Until 1964, the peat extracted here was used to heat the power plant in Wiesmoor. With the end of the power plant era, peat extraction in Uplengen continued and was primarily used in horticulture. Extraction finally ceased in 1998. The Stapeler Moor is now a strictly protected nature reserve and is undergoing extensive renaturalization. The extracted peat areas have been rewetted, and rushes and sphagnum mosses are once again thriving in the former cuttings. It will take centuries for a fully intact moor to re-emerge. Along the peatland discovery trail, information panels provide comprehensive information about the moor and its flora and fauna. It was a shame that the observation tower was closed; it's probably showing its age and is in a state of disrepair. ... Update March 2026: The dilapidated viewing platform has been demolished and a new observation tower has been built. I think it will be opened soon.

Königssee Astederfeld Swimming is unsupervised in the well-maintained outdoor pool at the "Haus am See" restaurant on Tarbarger Landstrasse in Astederfeld near Neuenburg. For this reason, entry is free. The large lake with a white sandy beach and a large lawn, surrounded by lots of greenery, invites you to swim, bathe and relax in summer. Children have enough space to frolic in the spacious area of the shallow water at the front. A toilet block is available for day visitors. At this large, former quarry lake there is a recreational area with over 60 comfortable pitches for caravans. All pitches are equipped with sewer, electricity and water connections. Guests also benefit from a comfortably equipped, heated sanitary building with toilets, showers, washing machine and a baby changing room.
