If you walk along the Hengsteysee, you will always see the Koepchenwerk. The plant is one of the first two pumped storage power plants in Germany to be built simultaneously on a large scale and is considered a monument to the energy industry. It was built between 1927 and 1930 and has been preserved in an almost authentic technical and structural condition. The Koepchenwerk was shut down in 1994, but has been a listed building since 1986. Today it is a site of the Industrial Monument Foundation.

The Hengsteysee reservoir, completed in 1929, follows the course of the Ruhr and is located between Hagen, Herdecke and Dortmund. A 6.5 km long footpath and cycle path runs around the Hengsteysee, which is ideal for walking, jogging, cycling or inline skating.
