The foundation stone was laid on March 17, 1928, and the tower was ceremonially inaugurated with a torchlight procession in June 1928. The water tower's tank held 60 cubic meters of water. By 1960, the water tower had become obsolete and slowly fell into disrepair. Today, the water tower is maintained by the Friends of the Old Water Tower Witzhelden Association. On May 7, 2000, after extensive work, a pétanque court was opened next to the tower. An old well has also been relocated to the grounds. Currently, the tower can only be viewed from the outside. The association plans to create an exhibition space on a second level within the tower in the coming years. It's wonderful that people still care about old buildings. We happened to meet a member of the association who proudly told us that the water tower is now a listed historical monument. They just haven't installed the plaque yet.
