Until about 200 years ago, a small stream, the Annonisbach, flowed roughly here. The Annonisbach (formerly also called "Tannenbach" or "Rotter Bach") gave its name to the small Kriegsdorf (war village), as the name of our village has no connection to "Kriegen" (war). Rather, it derives from the first documented mention of the village in 1143 as "Criekesdorph" (translated: "village by the small stream"). The Annonisbach has its source about 5 km from here in the Altenforst forest on the Mauspfad (Mouse Path). The spring is still easily found there today. From there, it flowed past Haus Rott and was for a long time an important tributary of the local ditches and ponds. It then flowed past what is now Kerpehof, which it presumably also supplied with sufficient water. An old map shows that the Annonisbach stream continued westward, eventually flowing into the Rhine near Rheidt. In 1917, part of the stream was piped by the Rheinisch-Westfälische Sprengstoff-Actien-Gesellschaft (later Dynamit Nobel AG) and later diverted into the Sieg River via the so-called Siegkanal, a fact that still describes its sad state today. The stream is named after the Archbishop of Cologne and Saint Anno II, born around 1010. In 1064, Anno II founded the Benedictine abbey on Michaelsberg in Siegburg. At that time, the small stream formed the border between the Vogtei of Siegburg and the Archdiocese of Cologne. And when Anno II died on December 4, 1075, his remains were received by the Siegburg convent at this stream, as Anno II wanted to be buried in his abbey on Michaelsberg. It is reported that during the transport of his body, the horses shied at the stream, which is why the Tannenbach became popularly known as the "Annonisbach." Not only the students of the Heinrich-Böll-Gymnasium, but also many Kriegsdorf residents wish to see the Annonisbach stream restored to its natural state. However, this is proving difficult because much of the stream runs underground in pipes. From 2023 to 2024, students at the Heinrich-Böll-Gymnasium (HBG) in Troisdorf have been studying the almost forgotten history of the Kriegsdorf Annonisbach stream. Archives were searched, experts interviewed, and field trips undertaken. Much was discovered, much will likely remain hidden forever.

The wide field here is mostly windy. Still very nice to drive and if you look closely you can see the Siebengebirge in the background.
