Schleswig-Holstein's Oldest Estate "Wahlstorf Estate is a unique oasis where East and West meet in magical nature." Located in the beautiful Holstein Switzerland region, Wahlstorf Estate is one of the oldest estates in Schleswig-Holstein and a rare, well-preserved example of a 16th-century estate. With its late medieval architectural style, it is of architectural significance. The listed estate now includes the manor house, three historic barns, and a horse stable. This is where explorer, ornithologist, zoologist, film producer, painter, and writer Victor Baron von Plessen (1900-1980) lived. He embarked on numerous expeditions to the Malay Archipelago from 1924 to 1938. Wahlstorf Estate, its inventory, and the East Asian collection of Victor Baron von Plessen are now owned by the Plessen Foundation Wahlstorf. The agricultural holding of approximately 900 hectares is managed by the Gut Wahlstorf Foundation.

When greylag geese and ducks take flight at the same time, a white-tailed eagle usually attacks the waterfowl, which protect themselves in groups by using defensive strategies or take flight, as the white-tailed eagle prefers to hunt on the ground or in the water. Other birds of prey, such as the common buzzard, red kite, and hobby, can also be seen at Kührener Teich and Lanker See.

The nature reserves 'Peninsulas and Bays in Lake Lanker' and 'Kührener Teich and Surroundings' (in the immediate vicinity of the Lanker See Nature Reserve) represent a typical landscape section of the East Holstein Lake District. Parts of Lake Lanker and Kührener Teich are designated as Natura 2000 sites. In the reed beds and alder groves, numerous duck species, as well as the Great Bittern, Marsh Harrier, Black-necked Grebe, Great Reed Warbler, Sedge Warbler, Wood Warbler, Black-throated Thrush, and Nightingale, breed in high population densities. The white-tailed eagle can also be easily observed from the NABU information hut at Kührener Teich.

Grazing of the Kührener Teich nature reserve takes place in the rewetting area along the railway line and at Lanker See by cattle belonging to the "Weidelandschaften e. V." association. The number of animals is calculated so that the area, in accordance with the "semi-open pasture landscape" concept, features alternating vegetation such as bushes, perennials, and short-grazed grasses.

The "Peninsulas and Bays in Lake Lanker" nature reserve encompasses 207 hectares of water, reed beds, extensive pastures, quarries, and birch and beech forests. Part of the area is extensively grazed by Galloway cattle to ensure the survival of the fragrant cowslip (Primula veris). In mid-May, the Appelwarder peninsula is yellow due to its massive presence.

The municipality's name comes from the Wahlstorf estate, first documented in 1224. The manor house was built by Detlev von Thienen and served as the ancestral seat of the ancient noble Thienen family for over 300 years until they emigrated to Austria, where they still live today.

Today, the breed is bred in many countries around the world. The first Highland cattle were introduced to Germany in 1975, and they have been used in the United States since the end of the 19th century. So-called small Highlands are either the result of selective breeding or are a by-product of covering too early or of very poor feed, as a comparison with breeding on the Hebrides and historical documents show.

The long and very symmetrical horns are usually shaped differently depending on the gender. In bulls, they typically have a strong, horizontally curved forward shape. In cows, the horns are usually significantly longer and curved upwards. The breed is particularly suitable for extensive pasture management and is often used in grazing projects.[1] When handling the animals, respect for the long horns is required. "Leadability" on a halter must be trained and maintained, as must driving them into pens.

Originally there were two breeds, the normally black and slightly smaller Kyloe, which lived on the islands of northwest Scotland, and a more reddish and slightly larger breed from the remote Highlands. Through breeding, the two breeds became one and achieved the red-brown coloring that is predominant today. The official names for the color spectrum of the long-haired coat are: red, yellow and black, and - less frequently - brindle, gray-brown (dun) and white.

The breed originates from the north-west of Scotland and the Hebrides, where it has developed the characteristics attributed to it through natural selection over the centuries - the small and relatively light Highland cattle are considered to be good-natured, robust and long-lived, they are suitable for year-round outdoor farming even on soils unsuitable for heavy cattle (suckler cow farming), calves easily and frequently, even without human help. They produce medium-creamy milk and low-cholesterol meat.
