Construction of the hall church, initially dedicated to Saint Nicholas, began at the instigation of Würzburg Cathedral Provost Kilian von Bibra with the construction of the three-aisled nave in 1488. The choir, the width of the nave, was built in 1505. The square tower was completed around 1530. Justus Jonas the Elder, a friend of Martin Luther, was pastor from 1553 to 1555. During the tour of the church, visitors can climb the church tower to the viewing gallery, which offers a good view of Eisfeld and the surrounding hills. Bertholdsburg Castle is the most important secular building in southern Thuringia. The castle's origins probably date back to the 13th century.

The 280 meters of elevation on the tour looked worse than they actually were. Although the road surface is in dire need of repair, it's still very easy to ride uphill.

The church is always open for silent prayer and the interior is also very well maintained.
