The Aarhus Å, which gave the street its name, was built over in the 1920s when a thoroughfare for heavy goods traffic through the city to the port industries was needed. In 1989, the Aarhus City Council made a fundamental decision to re-open the river to create an attractive urban environment in the city center. The re-opening was completed in 2014.

In the urban forest of Gellerup Skov in Aarhus there is a shelter by a small lake. Very nice area with benches and a fireplace, highly recommended. Free reservation possible via friluftslivaarhus.dk
