The whitewashed building consists of three wings enclosing a courtyard. Among the sights worth seeing are the preserved Baroque castle church (Danish: Gråsten Slotskirke) from 1699 and the castle park, laid out in 1700. The chapel and the castle park can be visited from April to October, when the royal family is away. Margrethe II and her family usually stay at Gravenstein Castle between mid-June and early August. Traditionally, the royal family arrives on the yacht Dannebrog, which is moored in front of Sønderborg Castle during the holiday weeks.

The Royal Kitchen Garden, which is very spacious and offers many views, is worth a visit for any garden lover. However, bicycles must be left outside. The layout of the beds is interesting; the entire area is strictly structured, but is lightened up by the diverse planting. Here, you can get a glimpse into what the royal family eats (when they live here) and which flowers are grown for decorative purposes.

A stone grave high on a hill. From here you have a beautiful view all the way to Gråsten. A bench at the side of the road invites you to linger. The grave is closed, but you can walk around it on a narrow path.

Could be hard to get to when it’s been raining. You need to cross an uphill meadow which becomes muddy. We’ve cleared it with MTBs and a child trailer, but the we had to hose everything down. Lots of fun though!

Egernsundbroen is a road and bascule bridge located in southern Denmark between the Gråsten district of Alnor and the town of Egernsund. The bridge crosses the narrow Egernsund, which connects Nybøl Nor with Flensburg Fjord. The country road that leads from Dybbøl to Skærbæk and the Gendarmstien, a former border control path and today's hiking trail, cross the road bridge. During the day, the bridge is opened once an hour, for commercial shipping it is opened immediately. The ships have a passage width of 25 meters at their disposal. Ferries have been shortening the detour around Nybøl Nor since the early 18th century. After three years of construction, the Egernsundbroen was inaugurated on June 19, 1968. Source: Wikipedia

A visit is definitely interesting and worthwhile. The Royal Kitchen Garden, from where the Danish royal court gets fresh vegetables, fruit, flowers and herbs, is open to everyone.

Not just a tip, but also a warning: It is pretty and so is the park, but unfortunately not accessible during the summer visit of the royal family. We only got to see the castle from the opposite side of the lake.

Definitely visit the castle and the royal kitchen garden, very beautiful garden, very nice employees, nice shop with great high-quality souvenirs, plants and great service. Tasty cakes and sandwiches, good selection. Admission free - it's worth a visit!
