The domain is accessible daily from sunrise to sunset. Free access to the domain, the swimming area is paid. The domain is smoke-free from 2024. Smoking and vaping is only allowed in the designated smoking areas. In addition to being a recreational domain, Nieuwdonk is also a nature reserve. This nature reserve is managed by the nature association vzw Durme. Some parts of the nature reserve are not accessible to the public, unless accompanied by a qualified guide. Reserve zone Donkmeer is of regional ornithological importance because of the presence of the only large breeding colony of grey herons in the Scheldt valley between Ghent and Dendermonde. The number of occupied nests in this colony is subject to quite strong fluctuations but has averaged around 60 since 1994. (Durme VZW)

This picturesque little house was not a bomb house, but had several functions: the decoy man kept his equipment there and used it as a temporary storage place for captured ducks. He could warm himself by a hearth fire and during busy fishing periods he would spend the night in an alcove. The giant poplar at this cooking house served as a beacon in the landscape: this way, approaching ducks could recognize this place from far away. Experts estimate the age of this tree at around 160 years. (Information board on site)
