It's no secret that the Gold Rush made California what it is today. With this history in mind the State of California has overseen the preservation of Empire Mine for decades. During its long life as an active mine (1850-1956) this mine was one of the biggest, deepest, and richest gold mines in California. Take some time to explore the area and a small portion of the 367(!) miles of underground tunnels.

Donner Pass sits at an elevation of 7,056 feet above Donner Lake. The pass was originally used by the California Trail and America's first transcontinental railroad. It is named after the ill-fated Donner Party, who overwintered there in 1846.

Standing at 7,729 in elevation, Hawks Peak in the tallest mountain in Tahoe Donner ski resort. It is also one of the most popular trails in Tahoe Donner.

Excellent views of Castle Peak and the surrounding mountains from here. It's also right next to the spur trail to the top of Andesite Peak if you're feeling energetic.

Castle Peak Trail is a short branch off the Pacific Crest Trail that leads straight to the summit of Castle Peak.

The old Hwy 40 passed through this summmit at 7135 ft elevation, still today the Donner Pass Road. Fast and heavy traffic of course goes over the I-80 interstate freeway a couple of miles north. Also the site of German BierGarten Restaurant "Summit Haus" open from mid June to Labor Day (early September) 11am-4pm, part of Sugar Bowl Resort
