De Ruiten is a typical polder mill that was rebuilt in 1935 using an old foundation. It was the last polder mill built for professional drainage in the province of Groningen and was taken out of service in 1968. Thanks to volunteer millers, the mill, which was restored in 1973, is now running regularly again and is a great photo opportunity.

The wooden Biesterwied lookout tower offers a beautiful view over the reed marsh of Tetjehorn and the Schildmeer. At a height of six meters you can spot rare birds, deer and foxes in this peaceful nature reserve.
