🌿🦆🚲 An impressive example of the ecological transformation of the Ruhr area! The Emscher floodplains on the border between Dortmund-Mengede and Castrop-Rauxel offer a unique mix of modern flood protection and renaturalized river landscape on the northern side.

I can't really judge whether the harbor is anything special. But cyclists should definitely stop by the area and visit the old boat lift.

The Lothringentrasse (Lothringen Route) connects the site of the former Lothringen mine with Bochum city center over a distance of almost 5.5 kilometers. The southern section of the railway line cycle path runs over a water-bound surface, while the northern section has a perfect asphalt surface.

The Rhine-Herne Canal was built through the middle of existing or future coal mining areas. Since 1914, it has served the southern Ruhr region and connected the Rhine with the Dortmund-Ems Canal. The Rhine-Herne Canal begins in the harbor canal of Duisburger Hafen AG. Its route follows the Emscher valley. After crossing the Emscher, it ends in the Dortmund-Ems Canal near Henrichenburg.

The ore railway line once supplied iron ore to the blast furnaces of Schalker and Bochumer Verein. In 2002, it was one of the first disused railway lines to be converted into cycling and hiking trails by the Ruhr Regional Association (RVR). Today, the line is one of the most popular tourist cycle paths in the Ruhr metropolis.
