The coastal dune extends for twenty km between the Tyrrhenian Sea and the lakes of the national park (Fogliano, Monaci, Sabaudia and Caprolace). It allows you to observe a beautiful panorama both in the direction of the sea and the hinterland, in the summer period it is very crowded with bathers and cars, for this reason it is rapidly degrading while in the winter period it is possible to observe migratory and wintering birds.

The wildlife recovery center managed by the forestry carabinieri of Villa Fogliano carries out rescue functions for injured animals 🦆🦢for their rehabilitation and subsequent release into the natural environment.

The building is currently used as a museum of local fauna, the access from the lake and the slipway for the fishing boats are still visible.

The coastal lake of Fogliano did not give its name to the area, as many people think. On the contrary, the village was inhabited by fishermen and was already the Borgo di Fogliano in ancient times. Details aside, the lake is the perfect setting for Villa Fogliano, a pleasant place and a favorite destination for families and birdwatchers 🔭.

On the shore of the coastal lake it is possible to make excellent naturalistic observations of the resident and migratory flora and fauna. In the distance, a strip of dunes separates the lake from the sea.

The nutria looks like a big giant mouse and is also a bit disgusting, it swims in the murky waters of canals and ponds, it is not dangerous but if it feels threatened it can bite.

The nutria (Myocastor coypus) is a rodent also known as a beaver, myopotamo. Native to South America, it feeds mainly on plants. Large in size (up to 10 kg), stocky, an excellent swimmer and digger, it has a large head, small ears, thick brown fur except for the tail, almost hairless, the first 4 toes of the hind leg joined by a membrane. Bred for its fur, following escapes from farms and introductions, the species has naturalized and spread widely in Italy, becoming, due to its great reproductive potential and limited number of predators, highly problematic and invasive because it threatens the balance of freshwater ecosystems and damages crops and river banks.

It is not possible to travel the entire route, but the part from Villa Fogliano to Sabaudia is worth the trip alone!
