Loose, dusty gravel when it’s dry - lots of fun

An important RAF base during the First and Second World Wars, RAF Yatesbury now stands silent in the fields outside Cherhill in Wiltshire, on the edge of the North Wessex Downs AONB. The remaining buildings are Grade II-listed and the land has been returned to agriculture. As a byway goes right past the site, you can get quite a good view of several of the site's aging buildings.

Wiltshire has a wealth of Roman roads and this one originally ran from London to Bath. Today, you can still walk some parts of it and this section is a hiking trail that passes by Cherhill Down. There are plenty of routes you can explore that use this ancient road and the Cherhill White Horse chalk carving can be found not far to the north.
