I don’t usually like audio guides but this was really well done. Interesting castle history, but also the characters and stories. And the chapel at the end is an excellent finale. I spent almost an hour here. No cafe but you can get tea/coffee/ ice cream. A good stop!

Impressive gateway to the Victorain country house with a golf coruse. A wedding and events venue. The old Orchardleigh house was demolsihed and presrnt one built 1856 by Thomas Wyatt for William Duckworth. Pevsver describes the new house as "picturesque, irregular and in mixed elizabethan style. Grad II/ The grounds were landscaped possivly by Repton and used as a filming location for 1974 BBC The treasure of Abbots Thomas and 2009 'The Queen" and 1987 episode of Miss Marple

Lovely views to the River Avon across this historic bridge. Dating from the 13th or 14th C

Joined from the Frome end via Elliots Lane. Cuts out the road section up the hill from Hapsford to Great Elm. Wonderfully surfaced. Suitable for any bike, walker, wheeled chair.

Monkton Combe is a beautiful and charming village just south of Bath. It has a stunning Norman Church, St Michael’s Church, the obligatory public house, and an old-fashioned ‘village lockup,’ where they used to detain the less sober of the village inhabitants. What is most interesting is that the churchyard contains the grave of Harry Patch, the last surviving British soldier who fought in the First World War. It is well worth having a brief stop here.

The tunnel lights were designed so you can see while not disturbing the bats. People using bright lights risk disturbing the bats and blinding other users. While you may feel using lights improves your ability to see and be seen they distract other users making it more difficult to see walkers, dogs etc.

The tunnel lighting was upgraded in late 2023 and you can now easily see other riders, runners or pedestrians, so you do NOT need dazzling front lights any more. In the interests of safety and to avoid accidents PLEASE dim or dip your light when in the tunnel!

A proper gasper. Secret way up to the secret bases at the top of the hill. Garmin decided I wanted to go this way for some reason and it kind of worked out.

I would second the first comment. Change of ownership makes this cafe a fantastic mid-ride stop option. Friendly owners and good food / drink at reasonable prices.

New lights in the tunnels as of 2023! Much better lit now in both tunnels.

A castle with a family history from 1160 to today. The family tree is simply gigantic.

Really nice and very welcome cafe serving breakfast, lunch and snacks through the day in a garden centre / nursery surrounding. Just a short cycle from the Kennet and Avon towpath

Much quieter and faster service than nearby Lock Inn.

Good tea, coffee, cake and these monster pizza-type things. Good to fuel you all the way to Bristol!

Started in the 14th century, and occupied by the Hungerford family for 300 years, Farleigh Hungerford Castle (now looked after by English Heritage) commands an impressive position overlooking the peaceful Frome Valley on the Wiltshire/Somerset border.

The café is a little way up Stony Street on the right but putting the highlight in exactly the right place means you can't route a road bike tour to the door without it saying that you have to push so the highlight is at the bottom of the street.

Managed by English Heritage this is a paid entry property unless your a member. The castle is a fortified mansion started in the 14th century. Today it's a ruin but there is still quite a lot left to explore. If you don't pay you can see the entrance from the car park which is quite impressive. You can also walk around the base on a footpath to the right (when facing the castle on the road). Open 10:00 - 17:00 everyday.

Food, drinks and rooms in a 700 year old pub. Nice beer garden. Pub open Mon to Thurs 8:00 - 22:30. Fri and Sat 8:00 - 23:00 and Sun 8:00 - 21:00. Food served Mon to Fri 8:00 - 11:30, 12:00 - 15:00 and 17:00 - 21:00. Sat 8:00 - 11:30 and 12:00 - 21:00. Sun 8:00 - 11:30 and 12:00 - 20:00.

The town bridge was originally constructed in the 14th century, then widened in the 18th century. If you view the bridge from the downstream side the arches are rounded but view from the upstream side and you'll notice that the arches are pointed. The small building on the bridge is thought to have originally been a chapel but was converted into the town lock up in the 17th century.
