It's unbelievable what people have achieved and built in the past (without any technology) - it's simply impressive and breathtaking

Sarsen stones are blocks of sandstone found in large numbers in England, it is a contraction of Saracen stone, where “Saracenic” is equivalent to “pagan”. In this respect, sarsen means something like “heathen stone”, “stone of the heathen”. The most famous sarsen stones can be found here in Stonehenge.

he parish church of St. Peter and St. Paul was founded in the late 11th century. It was given to Salisbury Cathedral c.1115 by Henry I to form part of a living. The value of this church was soon increased by other gifts of property, and within a few years there were canons at Heytesbury. By c.1160 it was established as a collegiate church with a dean and four prebendaries, two each of priests and deacons. A collegiate church was effectively a 'mother church' with resident priests whose task it was to go out into the wider community as missionaries, with the aim of encouraging new 'daughter churches'. In the 13th century the holder of the deanery became, and remained, the Dean of Salisbury. The college at Heytesbury and its property belonged to him. Most parishes came under the jurisdiction of the Bishop of the Diocese, but Heytesbury belonged to the Dean and was therefore known as a peculiar. The Cathedrals Act of 1840 dissolved the college and abolished the prebends. The church itself is described by Pevsner as 'a large and impressive church, but an over-restored one'. The external view is dominated by its low, massive and square Norman tower in the centre. Most of the building dates from the late 12th, the 13th and the 15th centuries.

There's a small cafe just inside the main gate - you can bring your bike in and prop it up on the slope opposite the cafe and purchase some refreshments (without paying the full entry price). There are toilets in the car park too, which might be useful!

"Old Sarum, in Wiltshire, South West England, is the now ruined and deserted site of the earliest settlement of Salisbury. Situated on a hill about 2 miles (3 km) north of modern Salisbury near the A345 road, the settlement appears in some of the earliest records in the country. It is an English Heritage property and is open to the public." Cit. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Old_Sarum "Old Sarum is one of the most enthralling and historically important sites in southern England. Uniquely, it combines a royal castle and cathedral within an Iron Age fortification, and for 150 years was a major centre of both secular and ecclesiastical government. Neither castle nor cathedral was occupied for long: in 1226 the cathedral was moved to Salisbury, although the castle remained an administrative centre into the 14th century. Old Sarum lived on, however, as a notorious ‘rotten borough’ which continued to elect members of Parliament until 1832." Cit. https://www.english-heritage.org.uk/visit/places/old-sarum/history/

We first considered whether we should save the entrance fee and use the outer path. However, we were not so sure about the parking situation from the northern entrance, which is why we decided to pay the entrance fee and took the bus from the visitor center to the bus stop right in front of the stones. We were a lot closer to it, especially on the south and west side, than the path of the non-payers, which leads past the stones at a greater distance. Since we will probably not have this chance again to look at the stones up close, we have not regretted the entry. By the way, cheaper with National Trust!

There are various, partly complementary, partly contradictory hypotheses about the reason and ultimate purpose of this highly complex system. These range from a self-portrait of a prehistoric alliance between two formerly hostile tribal organizations to a burial site, an astronomical observatory including a calendar for the sowing and harvesting times and a religious place of worship.

The Church of St Peter and St Paul is a beautiful Grade I-listed building in the heart of Heytesbury. A church has existed on this spot since the Domesday Book of 1086 but there was likely something here long before then. The church you see today was built in the 12th century, modified over the next 400 years, and then restored significantly in the Victorian era.

Old Sarum is thought to have been one of the earliest settlements in Salisbury and it appears in some of the UK's oldest records. Built close to Stonehenge and the Avebury monoliths, Old Sarum probably dates back to around 3000 BC. The settlement lived through varied history including Roman conquest, and Saxon and Norman rule. In 1514, Henry VIII sold the castle grounds and the settlement gradually fell into decline. The site is now managed by English Heritage and Grade I listed. You can visit from 10am - 4pm Friday to Sunday. Entrance is £5.40 per adult. More information: https://www.english-heritage.org.uk/visit/places/old-sarum/

One can measure his powers at this Sarsonstein. To get the stone moving, I still need 80 times.

Stonehenge was built in three phases, during which the stones were changed during the last phase often. The effort for the processing of the stones with the resources at that time was enormous. The origin of the first plant goes up to the time around 3100 v. Chr. Back. was built as a circular wall with a diameter of 110 meters and wooden structures in the middle. About 2500 BC The wooden buildings were replaced by stone buildings and the bluestone used here came from a quarry about 380 kilometers away in the Preseli Mountains of Wales. The approximately five-ton stones were probably transported by rafts across the River Avon to Stonehenge. The last phase of the construction lasted about 2300 to 1600 BC. During which the bluestones were rearranged and supplemented with even larger sandstones, the sarsen stones weighing up to 50 tons. Also more Walle and ditches were added to the plant of Stonehenge. After this final stage of construction, the monument of Stonehenge had three stone circles and a U-shaped structure in the center and was surrounded by two walls.

The inner stone circle consists of 5 triliths, which are placed in a horseshoe shape. The middle stone is proud 7 meters high, the other 6 meters each. In addition, there are the bluestone stones that stand in front of the trilithites to the middle of the plant. On the other hand, the outer stone circle consists of two stone circles: the outer Trilith stone circle and the concentric bluestone circle.

The stone circle Stonehenge is located in the middle south of England, in the county of Wiltshire near the town of Salisbury. The mystical area is known worldwide for its monumental proportions and the sheer unimaginable power of the builders. Stonehenge originated from the Neolithic period in three stages of construction, and today it has been estimated that up to 500 people must simultaneously have been involved in the transport of the huge boulders. On the other hand, experts are still arguing about the exact original destination of the facility. However, Stonehenge is a must for all visitors to England who like it historically.

The entry into the interior is not necessary if you only want to photograph from the fence. Unfortunately, it is very crowded and I was a bit disappointed by the size of the area. Nonetheless, one of the most important historic buildings of our time
