Old Sarum is thought to have been one of the earliest settlements in Salisbury and it appears in some of the UK's oldest records. Built close to Stonehenge and the Avebury monoliths, Old Sarum probably dates back to around 3000 BC. The settlement lived through varied history including Roman conquest, and Saxon and Norman rule. In 1514, Henry VIII sold the castle grounds and the settlement gradually fell into decline.

The site is now managed by English Heritage and Grade I listed. You can visit from 10am - 4pm Friday to Sunday. Entrance is £5.40 per adult. More information: english-heritage.org.uk/visit/places/old-sarum
