Just east of the A39 Atlantic HIghway is the Helebridge Basin. Regeneration work has been taking place here. The basin has been dredged and the canalside has been cleared so that visitors can get an idea of what the area looked like when the canal was in use.

Bude Canal was dug to provide a means to transport sand from the sea inland. The sand is rich in lime and made a great fertiliser for the acidic farmland which was otherwise very unproductive. The initial idea for the canal was in 1774 but it wasn't until 1825 that the canal was actually opened. This two mile stretch from Bude to Helebridge is wide enough for a barge. The canal continues for another 33 miles on a much narrower scale. In this later section the boats were pulled by horses, unusual in the fact that the boats were on wheels. In 1901, the canal was used for the last time for its intended purpose, following the rise of railway transportation. The first two miles were restored in 2009 in a £5 million project.

From up here you can see across the wide expanse of sand that makes up Widemouth Bay. It is popular with surfers so this is a good spot for watching. Towards the south of the beach you can see Black Rock stretching out into the water.

On the cliff at Efford Beacon is a trig point used by the Ordnance Survey in the process of mapping the country. They are usually on the highest land in the area so are often accompanied by beautiful views. Here you can see Compass Point to the north and on to Bude and GCHQ CSO Morwenstow on the horizon.

A short distance from Bude is Compass Point, also known as the Storm Tower or Tower of the Winds. It sits in a precarious position on the rapidly eroding cliff edge. Built in the 1830s, in 1881 it was moved inland to save it from falling into the sea. It is now facing a similar predicament. Plans are being made to once again move the tower, brick by brick, to safer ground.

Bude Canal was built in 1823 to allow the transportation of mineral rich sand from Bude and the surrounding area inland to fertilize agricultural land. This revolutionised farming in the area and also allowed slate and granite to be transported to the sea. The canal was abandoned in 1891 and restoration is in progress.

Cycling along Marine Drive offers fantastic views of the sea and the Cornish coastline. Here you can look south onto Widemouth Bay and beyond.

Bude Canal opened in 1823 to carry sand for agricultural fertiliser to the hilly hinterland in Devon and Cornwall. Its construction cost £118,000, a considerable amount at the time. The canal runs 35 miles (56 km) from Bude to Vinworthy, Blagdon and Druxton. Today, boats can no longer navigate the entire canal as two locks have been replaced by concrete damns. Nonetheless, it remains a pretty canal with abundant wildlife.

Widemouth Bay boasts a long expanse of golden sand and is popular with families and surfers. At low tide there are hundreds of rock pools to explore. The beach, which has received the Blue Flag Beach Award 2019, has a lifeguard on duty during peak times.

Compass Point is an octagonal storm tower situated high on the cliffs with breathtaking views out to sea. Also known as the ‘Tower of the Winds’, the tower was originally built in the 1830s and was rebuilt in the 1880s to look like the Temple of the Winds, in Athens, Greece.
