Portmellon is a very small village and cove. The road closely hugs the sandy beach, which is completely covered by the sea at high tide. There is a snack shack in the beach carpark and a pub next door if you are in need of sustenance. If you approach Portmellon from the South West you will see the 'Beware Waves' sign on your left. Take heed on stormy days as the waves crash right over the road and can even hit the houses.

There is a great view of Caerhays Castle from the road, down the access lane to the west of the main castle entrance. Caerhayes Castle and gardens are open to the public during the spring. A beach cafe run by the castle at Caerhays Bay is open all year round. For more information visit their website https://visit.caerhays.co.uk/ The building was built in 1808 and the woodland gardens were created from the finds of plant hunters who returned from China in the 19th Century. For Poldark fans, although it isn't a filming location, in one of the novels Jeremy, Ross and Demelza's son meets a romantic interest at Caerhays Castle.

This scenic road through Lamorran Woods weaves through the trees and skirts the river. It is generally quiet here, away from the busier tourist haunts and there is a real sense of peace and calm. Superb in autumn with the leaves in full colour.

Just over the hill from Mevagissey, Portmellon is an equally quaint village on the edge of the Cornish coast. The village lies in the Cornwall Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, surrounded by a sandy beach and rugged coastline. At low tide, you can enjoy a walk on the beach, which then disappears at high tide. The houses facing the coast are characterized by their wooden shutters which are closed to protect their windows during raging storms.

1월 3, 2020, The Lost Gardens of Heligan
The Lost Gardens of Heligan make for a mysterious and romantic visit. The gardens lay forgotten for decades after the outbreak of WWI until 1990, when they were re-discovered behind a door. Heligan was built in the 13th century and was purchased by the Tremayne family in the 16th century. The gardens were developed from 1766 until 1914 with the construction of a walled garden, melon yard, bee boles and more. Following the outbreak of WWI, the house was used as a hospital for officers, from 1939 until 1945 it housed American troops before being converted into flats and sold in the 1970s. The gradens were restored to their former glory during the 1990s. You can easily spend a day wandering the 200 acres of gardens, which are open from 10am until 6pm. Tickets for adults cost £15. You can find more information, here: https://www.heligan.com/

7월 4, 2019, Mevagissey Harbour
In the narrow streets of Mevagissey you find myriad shops, workshops, galleries, cafes and pubs, as well as many old buildings made of cob and slate. There are plenty of traditional fish and chip shops to try here, too. The picturesque town was once the centre of Cornwall’s pilchard fishery and, even today, still has a small working harbour with a few dozen fishing boats.

There is no Mevagissey Bay. Mevagissey is in St. Austell Bay. Obviously the comment was written by another incomer. There is a harbour in this little fishing village, but there is no harbor. Where on earth do these people come from?

Mevagissey (Cornish: Lannvorek) is a large English fishing village on the south coast of County Cornwall. It is located about 6 miles south of St Austell in Mevagissey Bay. At the harbor there is the free accessible aquarium. For the "Teatime" after the exploration tour through the village, we recommend a trip to the Teacup Tearoom. https://teacuptearoom.com/

Mevagissey began life as two distinct settlements: the first known as Lamorrick or Lavorrick, was a small religious community in the area around what is now St.Peter’s Church which would have been established perhaps a thousand years ago; then later a fishing hamlet called Porthilly began to cluster around the northern side of the cove (the Cliff Street/Church Street area). The name Mevagissey, which united the two settlements (the name coming from the two saints Meva and Issey to whom the church was once dedicated ) , was not in common use until the end of the 15th century. Land communications in Cornwall were largely non-existent until the 15th century, and Mevagissey’s fortunes have always been firmly tied to the sea and fishing in particular. At times in its history it has been one of the top fishing harbours in the South West, such boom years being reflected in spates of house building and improvements to the harbour and village. The Harbour also seems to be unique in that it is attracting youngsters into the industry, which hopefully will keep the fishing industry alive. Over the years a lot of projects have been carried out within the Harbour to modernise and support an ever-changing Fishing Industry. New Ice Plants, Cold Stores, Bait Store, Craneage, fork Lift and Storage Lofts have been supplied/ built to try and accommodate every need. All of this would not have been possible if it wasn’t for grant aid from various sources. Mevagissey remains a very busy Fishing Harbour, which adds to its charm. http://www.mevagisseyharbour.co.uk/

Mevagissey lighthouse was built in 1896 to mark the south breakwater that protects the small harbour. The 8-metre high hexagonal cast iron tower is painted white with a black band around the base. The lantern houses a white light that shows for 1.5 Seconds followed by 2 seconds of darkness, it then gives another flash with a duration of 1.5 seconds, followed by 5 seconds of darkness, before repeating the cycle. The light is visible for 12 Nautical miles, and a fog-signal mounted on the gallery sounds once every 30 seconds in reduced visibility. http://www.worldwidelighthouses.com/Lighthouses/English-Lighthouses/Privately-Owned/Mevagissey
