Charlestown Harbour is the last open 18th-century Georgian harbour in the UK and is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Nice flat multi-use track. Tarmac for the 1st half then hard parked gravel for the rest. Suitable for road bikes, at least I ride it with my 28mm tyres without any issues.

The three white houses on Chapel Point were built in the 1930s and feature in Daphne Du Maurier's novel 'The House on the Strand'.

Portmellon is a very small village and cove. The road closely hugs the sandy beach, which is completely covered by the sea at high tide. There is a snack shack in the beach carpark and a pub next door if you are in need of sustenance. If you approach Portmellon from the South West you will see the 'Beware Waves' sign on your left. Take heed on stormy days as the waves crash right over the road and can even hit the houses.

This shared use hiking and cycling path passes by the St Austell River in the Pentewan Valley. It was an important place in the area's industrial history with tin being transported down the river from the St Austell mines to be shipped out at Pentewan Harbour. The river was even straightened to simplify the journey.

It is now a flat traffic free trail of around 4.5km in one direction so makes the perfect place to run at a consistent pace. It also makes a great way to link St Austell with the coast path for a longer run. As it is so flat it is either a great warm up or warm down after a hilly coast run.

Lovely seaside village to stop off at for refreshments during your ride. Great coffee and cakes available from Little Bay Cafe or if you fancy a beer there's the Ship Inn with its beer garden. Personally I love a Flat White on the bench looking out over the beach listening to the sea 💝

The coast between St Austell and Pentewan is rugged and glorious. There are some stiff climbs and descents but the views are worth it. It makes you feel a million miles away from busy St Austell.

Pentewan harbour is entirely cut off from the sea after the clay export industry here dried up in favour of nearby Charlestown and Par. It was also used for pilchard fishing which is now similarly inactive. There is a post office and shops plus a large caravan park where holiday makers can make the most of the wide sand on Pentewan beach.

A couple of pubs to stop at or choose to stay at Pentewan Sands, a great place for base camp 🏕 and enjoy the local trails and bike paths.
