After the ice ages, the Lech River transported vast quantities of gravel and rubble from the Alps to the Danube. When the snow melted, it transformed into a wild torrent, sweeping away everything in its path. The inhabitants of the Lech Valley feared these floods, as villages and fields were frequently inundated. Nature adapted to these conditions, as wild rivers like the former Lech were home to a very special flora and fauna. The riverbed was extensively branched, a ribbon several hundred meters wide of river arms, gravel banks, alluvial forests, and streams fed by groundwater. Here, at the Litzau Loop, the Lech has been preserved almost in its original form.

The Litzau Loop is an absolute highlight that you have to see.
