This is a bit of a hidden gem. It's quite easy to miss it, yet it has a large indoor seating area as well as outside tables and chairs. Open 7 days a week. Big choice of snacks, cakes, and coffees. Recommended.

In the 2nd and 3rd centuries AD, Easton Grey was an important Roman settlement on the Fosse Way.

I believe this lane was once part of the main Bristol to Oxford road. The Saxon M4 🙂

I stopped here for a break and a local gentleman told me the history of King's Heath. It was given to the people of Malmesbury by King Athelstan over a millennium ago in recognition of their efforts against Viking invaders.

Amazingly the abbey has a written history covering 1300 years. Although today little of the monastic complex remains visible, extensive buried remains will survive and the monument is important as a site with early origins and which continued in use as a monastic house until its dissolution in 1535.

A very pretty spot. There's short though challenging climbs out in either direction.

A great place to stop. Sit on the square and enjoy a coffee in the sun.

You can enjoy three crossings of the Common and make an out and back and out again route zig zagging across the old roads. Just be careful to watch the wind direction. Headwinds can be brutal.

A traffic free lane that connects Milbourne Lane to the main road or Blicks Hill in or out of Malmesbury.
