11월 5, 2023, Chepstow Castle
Standing proudly on a limestone cliff above the River Wye, Chepstow Castle is a magnificent fortress with a history that stretches back nearly 1,000 years. Founded in 1067 by Earl William fitz Osbern, a close friend of William the Conqueror, the castle was one of the first Norman strongholds in Wales. These days, it is an interesting place to visit and affords some stunning views.

1월 16, 2023, Tintern Wireworks Bridge
Constructed as a light railway bridge in the 1870's for the Wireworks branch of the Monmouth and Wye Valley Railway. The Wireworks closed in 1901 but the bridge continued to carry a horse tramway until 1935 when it was finally closed and has been a footpath ever since. It's currently being renovated. Delivery and installation of the steelwork is expected to commence in late January 2023, with completion of these steelworks scheduled for late February 2023.

A very cool and unusual experience. This disused railway tunnel is home to a small colony of bats. You can’t use any lights while walking through the tunnel due to the bats but there is low-level lighting installed. With just over 1km in length to walk, your eyes will adapt! Before planning a walk here be aware of the tunnel’s strict opening and closing times, and dates. It shuts completely from the end of September for 6 months every year.

The tunnel closes at 7pm every day. Worth knowing for anyone that may be planning a later ride in the summer months.

7월 5, 2022, Tintern Abbey
Tintern Abbey was founded in 1131 by Walter de Clare, Lord of Chepstow. It fell into disrepair after the king Henry VIII ordered the dissolution of the monasteries in the 16th century. Today it's a paid for entry tourist site attracting around 70,000 visitors per year. You can see a lot from the road though or from one of the many local cafes.

Steepish track up but then grassy slopes and woods. Pandoramic views from the hill even if you don’t go up the tower.

Exquisitely preserved, Tintern Abbey was founded in the early 12th century and lies on the banks of the River Wye. Whilst its roof is long gone, its exterior walls remain standing, making it quite atmospheric to explore. The structure you see today largely dates from the 13th century when the abbey was considerably renovated. The abbey fell into ruin after the Dissolution but its fame didn't fade for long. In fact, it's been the subject of poetry and art since the 18th century, notably featuring in William Turner's painting, The Chancel and Crossing of Tintern Abbey. It's under the management of the Welsh government's Cadw department and there's an entry fee if you'd like to walk around the ruins.

An interesting old railway bridge which I believe took industrial rail across the river to join Chepstow to Monmouth. The surrounding countryside is stunning and in the local area is Tintern Abbey as well as a sculpture park and other interesting buildings.

The bridge was constructed in 1872-5 and was actually ready for use before the railway which served it. It was designed by S H Yockney and Son of Westminster for the Wireworks branch of the Monmouth and Wye Valley Railway. The contractors were Reed Bros of London and the ironwork was supplied and erected by the Isca Foundry of Newport. The bridge was designed to carry no more than a small locomotive and three trucks. The Wireworks closed in 1901 but the bridge continued to carry a horse tramway until 1935 when it was finally closed and has been a footpath ever since.

It's great fun to cycle though a tunnel, though I've not seen them in this one has bats to keep you company. Because of the bats cycle lights should be switched off, their are lights inside the tunnel, quite dim, but good enough to see.
