    The tunnel is darker than the photo suggests and the wall lights mostly illuminate legs and wheels at best! It is a fun and great experience though. The Wye Vale Greenway ride is an easy 12 mile return journey from Chepstow to Tintern - Tintern has some decent pubs. Be aware of the tunnel’s strict opening and closing times, and dates. For example it shuts completely from the end of September for 6 months every year. The (less than) 30 bats are well catered for!

      Please note that the tunnel is closed until April and the bridge to Tintern is closed for 6 months from April 2022

        It's great fun to cycle though a tunnel, though I've not seen them in this one has bats to keep you company. Because of the bats cycle lights should be switched off, their are lights inside the tunnel, quite dim, but good enough to see.

          A spectacular experience to ride through. This disused railway tunnel is home to bats which is why there is low level lighting along the walls inside the tunnel.
          After entering the tunnel from the north or south side the tunnel takes a corner before opening up to a long straight with the lights stretching out into the darkness.
          You can’t use any lights while cycling or walking through the tunnel due to the bats but it’s not a issue with the installed lighting. 1080m in length and a fantastic use of a once disused tunnel.

            Brilliant. Felt very cold on a hot and humid day which was very welcome... I wonder if it feels warm in the winter? The lighting was very ambient which added to the thrill.

            Due of the bat colony, please remember to keep your lights off... you don't need them anyway.

              The tunnel closes at 7pm every day. Worth knowing for anyone that may be planning a later ride in the summer months.

                  A one-of-a-kind cycling experience, definitely worth checking out! Be sure to take note of the tunnel's opening and closing times before you set off :)

                    I've done this 5 times and it's always a nice ride in either direction between Wydean School and Tintern. When it's opens in early May it's pretty cold inside on the hands and face. The bottom end near Tintern can be boggy at times, don't recommend Road Biking it.

                        It is pretty dark as you cannot use your own lights due to roosting bats. Take is steady and keep left.

                          newly opened tunnel connecting Chepstow to Tintern along the Wye valley Greenway. about a kilometre long. no lights allowed as there's a bat colony but it's got decent, albeit slightly low, lighting along the walls inside.

                            The new Wye Valley Greenway is spectacular and the tunnel is wonderful. A fantastic project.
