Between 1934 and 1938, the lake was dug by hand by the Reich Labor Service on the orders of the National Socialists. The water level of Lake Rantzauer is regulated by damming the Krückau, which feeds it. This intervention in nature and the associated interruption of the hiking trail for the local fish world caused problems in the past. The mill was largely restored after a fire in 1940; the two overshot water wheels are put into operation every year on German Mill Day.
