The "Xanas," after whom the gorge is named, are Asturian mountain stream nymphs who enchant shepherds on St. John's Eve. The path was created in the 1930s as preparatory work for a planned road from Villanueva to Pedroveya, which ultimately never came to fruition.

Once you get to the top, there is a small restaurant. (Bar Casa Generosa) There is only the menu of the day (3 courses) Some "senoras mayores" cook here in their large pots in the classic Asturian style (e.g. Fabada Asturiana...) Everything is very tasty and more than enough. And the best thing is, everything for little money. 100% recommendation

A great hike, very varied. First the gorge, then it feels like you're in the jungle. Later a small mountain village. Great.
