The Torreón de Sor María de Leiva is one of the historical attractions of Santo Domingo de la Calzada. It is part of the walled enclosure of Santo Domingo de la Calzada. Built between the 14th and 16th centuries, the tower is an example of the defensive architecture of the period. The tower and its surroundings offer excellent opportunities for photography, especially at sunset.

The primitive Romanesque church was built dedicated to the Savior and Saint Mary. In 1098, King Alfonso VI donated land for its construction. The cathedral was consecrated in 1106 by Bishop Don Pedro Nazar. It later became a collegiate church around 1158 and finally a cathedral after 1232. Since then, it has been the seat of the bishop of Calahorra-La Calzada. Construction of the current church began in 1158, preserving much of the old structure. In the 16th century, the right part of the transept was raised to house the tomb of Saint Dominic.

The cathedral houses a chicken coop in which a live rooster and hen live. The animals are protected as an Asset of Cultural Interest by the Government of La Rioja. The rooster and hen are replaced every two weeks and are there to commemorate the legend of the hanged man. This account that a pilgrim was hanged after being accused of robbery. When his parents went to see the body, they found that he was alive. The pilgrim told them that Santo Domingo de la Calzada had saved his life. The parents told the mayor of the city, who did not believe them and told them: "Your son is as alive as the roasted rooster and hen that I am eating." According to legend, the animals regained their feathers and came back to life at that very moment.

This tower is part of the defensive belt of the city, whose layout was defined in the mid-14th century, according to tradition on the initiative of Pedro I the Cruel. There is still part of the defensive moat and the wall.

Beautiful route with good firmness and a comfortable and safe route. Old stations, bridges and magnificent landscapes await you. If you are going to visit it in summer, keep in mind that it goes through very open areas with little shade and it can be quite hot.

In addition to the fact that it is the only church-fortress in La Rioja, what is most striking is that inside it houses a henhouse in which a real rooster and hen live, which are also protected as an Asset of Cultural Interest by the Government of La Rioja. The animals are replaced every two weeks and allude to the legend of the hanged man. The myth tells that a pilgrim was hanged after being unjustly accused of theft. When his parents went to see the body they found their son alive and he told them that Santo Domingo de la Calzada had saved his life. The parents proclaimed that their son was alive, but the mayor of the city did not believe them and told them something like: "Your son is as alive as the roasted rooster and hen that I am eating." And suddenly, according to legend, the animals regained their feathers and came back to life.

"In commemoration of this legend one finds in the cathedral a peculiar arrangement which is probably not found in any other place of worship. Two white hens, a rooster and a hen, are kept in a large cage. If the rooster crows while one is in the church, it should be a particularly good sign for the way ahead. (...) I take a good look at the cathedral, which partly has the character of a museum. Pilgrims with a pilgrim's pass get admission at half price and as a bonus the pilgrim's stamp." (Jo Hagen in "Buen Camino. Diary of a bicycle trip on the Way of St. James")

That chickens are kept in a house of God is probably nowhere else outside of "Santo Domingo de la Calzada", but here - in this cathedral on the Camino Frances - it is a tradition that has been preserved to this day. Steffen and Willem have already addressed the legend of the "chicken miracle" in their contributions. I need not repeat that here.

Since the middle of the 11th century, when Santo Domingo de la Calzada built a primitive bridge, until today, it has undergone many transformations. The left half of the current one is from the middle of the 18th century, built in masonry stone with breakwaters, previous arches that decrease in height at their ends are respected. The other half is from the mid-20th century, built in concrete with rectangular spurs. The length is 148 m and 16 arches. It is located in the town of Santo Domingo de la Calzada, La Rioja, Spain. https://www.biodiversidadvirtual.org/etno/Puente-de-Santo-Domingo-de-la-Calzada-img67822.html

The original hermitage became a church dedicated to the saint and was later consecrated as a cathedral. Located in the central Plaza del Santo, this temple was begun in 1158 in the Gothic style, although it has elements of Romanesque origin, such as the main facade and apse, and others that are Baroque or Renaissance in style, such as the slender free-standing tower. Inside the cathedral, a beautiful main altarpiece in Plateresque style and the tomb with the Romanesque sculpture of the saint stand out. Next to the chapels, the choir and the cloister, a chicken coop attracts attention, a reminder of a miracle that took place in these lands. The popular Spanish saying "Santo Domingo de la Calzada, cantó la gallina después de asada" refers to the miracle by which a rooster and a chicken were revived to prove the innocence of a young man who was wrongly convicted hanged and survived his sentence. https://vivecamino.com/santo-domingo-de-la-calzada/que-ver/
