2월 17, 2026, Capo Murro di Porco Lighthouse and Ruins
Capo Murro di Porco Lighthouse (Faro di Capo Murro di Porco) on the Maddalena Peninsula near Syracuse, Sicily. Here are three interesting facts about it: Strategic Location: The lighthouse marks one of the southeasternmost points of Sicily. It is an important navigational aid in the Ionian Sea and guards the entrance to the Gulf of Syracuse. Historical Decay and Charm: As you can clearly see in the picture, the original keeper's house is in a state of severe disrepair. This "ruin aesthetic" within the Plemmirio Marine Protected Area makes the site a popular destination for photographers and hikers. Revitalization Plans: In recent years, efforts have been made to restore such historic lighthouses as part of the Italian project "Valore Paese Fari" (Value of Lighthouses as a Country). The aim is to transform them into exclusive accommodations or cultural centers in order to preserve the architectural heritage without compromising their maritime purpose.

Unfortunately, not much remains of the temple. If you're already there, you can take a look. But it's not worth making a special trip just for it.

I actually expected more ancient sites in Syracuse, so I'm particularly pleased about these artifacts, as most of the sights date from much later eras.

Ortygia welcomes visitors to the island with the ruins of the Temple of Apollo, dating back to the early 6th century BC. Originally a Christian basilica, it was used by the Arabs as a mosque and converted back into a Christian church by the Normans. You can admire the archaeological site from the outside, as the interior is closed to the public.

10월 15, 2024, Velodromo di Noto
In Noto, not far from some churches that have made Sicilian Baroque famous throughout the world, there is a remarkable open-air velodrome. It is named after Paolo Pilone, a now deceased track cyclist. It can be experienced more or less always and in every way: not infrequently, children play football inside the track, on which anyone can take a ride.

4월 27, 2024, Testa dell'Acqua Water Fountain
Testa d'Acquua is a semi-unknown town, known above all to riders on bikes or motorbikes due to the water fountains present there. One in the village and a wash house just before arriving in the village. In reality, there is also a NATO radar dome nearby. The town is practically a wild west scenario, quite desolate. But there is a well-stocked grocery bar for a stop!

Created by the sculptor Giulio Moschetti between 1906 and 1907, this fountain represents a connection between ancient Greek mythology and the urban culture of Syracuse. In the center of the fountain is the figure of Diana, the goddess of the hunt, with her bow and dog, symbolically protecting Ortigia, the historic island of Syracuse. At her feet is the nymph Arethusa, who transforms herself into a freshwater spring to escape the persecutions of the river god Alpheios. This scene is flanked by the depiction of the disbelieving Alpheios, who witnesses the transformation of his lover. The Fontana di Diana is not only an art-historical masterpiece, but also tells the fascinating legend of Arethusa and Alpheios, offering a deep insight into the mythological roots and cultural significance of the freshwater spring Fonte Aretusa. This spring, just a few meters from the sea, played a crucial role in the founding and development of Syracuse and has inspired human imagination for centuries. The design of the fountain with tritons, seahorses and classical masks and coats of arms underlines the importance of water and the marine world for the city. The Fontana di Diana is not only a highlight for visitors to Piazza Archimede, but also an important symbol of the connection between the city of Syracuse, its history and Greek mythology.

The construction of a fountain was requested by the city administration after the creation of Piazza Archimede in 1878. The sculptor Giulio Moschetti was commissioned to build it. The work was completed in ten months, between 1906 and 1907. The fountain faces south and shows the figure of Diana with a bow and dog, the attributes of the goddess of the hunt, the protector of Ortigia in Greek times. At her feet is Arethusa, stretching as she transforms into a fountain. Alphaeus stands to the side, watching in disbelief what is happening to his beloved. In the second row inside the pool are four Tritons on two seahorses and two Pistrici rearing up on the waves. The basin features some masks and coats of arms that trace a classic style of shapes.
