Three main places outline the identity of Palazzolo Acreide: the ancient Greek settlement of Akrai, located in the upper part of the city, with its well-preserved remains and a Greek theater that still shines in its grandeur; the suggestive medieval centre, dominated by the mighty castle; and the upper district, skillfully rebuilt after the devastating earthquake of 1693, with its baroque churches and elegant noble palaces.

The theatre, discovered in 1824 by the diligent Judica, has been the subject of significant excavation, restoration and reconstruction works. The accuracy of the interventions is also due to the contribution of Bernabò Brea, another scholar who dedicated time and energy to this historical monument. The cavea, partially sunken into the hillside, has nine wedges and an estimated 14 steps. Access to the auditorium was via narrow passages located on the sides of the stage, given that the traditional parodoi were absent. Although not of impressive dimensions, this theater revealed its potential through a meticulous reconstruction that involved up to the twelfth step.
