The school building, dating from 1575, is the second oldest school building in Thuringia. The ground floor is constructed of sandstone with two round-arched portals. Construction of the hall church, initially dedicated to Saint Nicholas, began at the instigation of Würzburg Cathedral Provost Kilian von Bibra with the construction of the three-aisled nave in 1488.
