Many old and picturesque houses line the large stone fountain in the middle of Ernen's village square. Their foundations are mostly made of stone and adorned with detailed frescoes, while the upper floors are constructed of wood and decorated in other ways. Together, they create a truly picture-perfect scene! The village's appearance has already been awarded the Wakker Prize and is of national importance. A stop at one of the village pubs is definitely worthwhile!

Here, you can admire old wooden water pipes. These were once used to irrigate fields. Chännla is the local name for them, and the word probably comes from Känel, or canal.

Absolute highlight between Fürgangen and Mühlebach

On January 1, 2017, Niederwald merged with the municipalities of Blitzingen, Grafschaft, Münster-Geschinen, and Reckingen-Gluringen to form the new municipality of Goms. César Ritz, the founder of the Ritz luxury hotels, was born in Niederwald in 1850. In 1898, he opened the Hotel Ritz in Paris as his first luxury hotel. Later, the Hotel Ritz in London and other hotels in other cities followed. He found his final resting place in Niederwald with his wife and son.

As children, we hated the connection between Fürgangen and Mühlebach when hiking: deep down into the gorge on steep paths and back up on the other side. The suspension bridge is a blessing!
