A sunken path is one of those landscape elements that immediately evokes a sense of timelessness. This beautiful, sunken path winds like a natural corridor through the landscape, surrounded by raised banks, tree roots, and dense greenery. It's as if you're entering a quiet passageway used for generations by walkers, farmers, and villagers. Sunken paths often developed through prolonged and intensive use. Repeated use by people, carts, and livestock gradually wore down the soil, while rainwater and erosion exacerbated the process. Thus formed, these paths today sometimes lie a meter lower than the surrounding terrain, a tangible reminder of former connections between villages, fields, and meadows.

The white dunes in the Brunssummerheide are a unique and special part of this nature reserve in the Dutch province of Limburg. These sand dunes were formed by centuries of wind and sand drifts on open heathlands, creating gently rolling hills that contrast sharply with the surrounding dark pine forests and green heathlands. The white dunes have not only an aesthetic value but also an ecological function. The open sandy plains provide a habitat for rare plants and animals that thrive in dry, nutrient-poor conditions, such as various mosses, lichens, and sand lizards. Thanks to the open heathland and tranquil woodlands, it is also a popular spot for birds, including the nightjar and woodlark. For hikers and cyclists, there are numerous marked trails that lead you to the most beautiful spots. From the higher elevations, you'll also be rewarded with panoramic views of the Limburg and even the German border region. The visitor center on the edge of the area offers information, route starting points, and a nice place to begin or end your trip.

The Roode Beek stream meanders through the heart of the Brunssummerheide, creating a unique natural setting in South Limburg. Its clear water, marshy banks, and surrounding heathland attract a wealth of birds, dragonflies, and other wildlife. Along the stream, you'll find picturesque walking paths that offer a different atmosphere throughout the year: from blooming heather in summer to mystical mists in autumn. It's the perfect spot to quietly enjoy the water and nature.
