It was built on the site of the former Mesón de la Fruta comedy theater, which had been in operation since the 16th century. The theater is named after the Toledo playwright Francisco de Rojas Zorrilla. It was designed by Luis Antonio Fenech and completed by Ramiro Amador de los Ríos, son of the historian José Amador de los Ríos.
