A day visiting the UNESCO rated hilltop city of Toledo with its cathedral and Alcazar. To be honest though whoever thought of building a cathedral at the top of a 500m hill and the car park at the bottom needs speaking to. At least they put in escalators all the way to the top though (honest 🤷). Stunning, stunning place.

A Roman municipium, the capital of the Visigothic Kingdom, a fortress of the Emirate of Cordoba, an outpost of the Christian kingdoms fighting the Moors.

Impressive art collections of the great Spanish masters are publicly displayed here in a richly decorated cathedral whose construction was approved by the pope in 1222. The adjoining cloisters are free to access, but this might be the one church to visit. It's worth to climb and take in the fantastic views from the tower.

Toledo has a very beautiful old town, especially the Santa María Cathedral and the Alcázar. From the Camping El Greco campsite, you can walk to the old town in about 15 minutes via the Puente de San Martín.

The Cathedral is the most grandiose and monumental building in the city. It is a Gothic cathedral started in the 13th century, although over the centuries that its construction lasted it has Renaissance, Baroque and Neoclassical elements.
In addition, it contains very important works of art such as the Custodia for the Corpus Christi procession, the Baroque Transparente made by Narciso Tomé and the Expolio by the painter El Greco. Its sacristy houses an impressive treasure trove of works of art. It has 19 works by El Greco alone, but to these we must add others by painters such as Goya, Caravaggio, Titian, Van Dick, Goya, Morales, Orrente or Tristan. Also noteworthy are the Chapter House, the chapel of San Ildefonso, the sacristy, the chapel of Reyes Nuevos, the choir, the cloister... Therefore it is a monument that must be visited, to discover all the treasures it holds within.

Mandatory visit point in Toledo. The square is beautifully illumimated in the evening. It is surrounded mainly by the City Hall and the Saint Maria de Toledo Cathedral.

Cathedral visit is also a strong point. Full of art (El Greco is well represented) and heavy deco in a classic Gothic architecture.

Started in 1226 by order of Archbishop Ximénez de Rada, under the reign of Fernando III El Santo, it was finished in 1493. The main sacristy stands out, presided over by El Expolio by El Greco, the Reliquary Treasure with the Monstrance of Arfe, the Chapter House , the Choir and the Main Chapel.

Very nice Cathedral Santa María, but costs 10€ entry. You have to buy the tickets in the shop opposite, there is an audio guide.

The Primate Cathedral of Spain is an extremely impressive five-aisled Gothic building with beautiful stained glass windows. There are several absolute highlights in this church for which the audio guide offers very good explanations with historical background. El banners, choir stalls, Renaissance wall around the choir stalls, Gothic high altar, paintings by El Greco in the sacristy, good film "Toledo of Light" in a room in the cloister...
We easily spent two and a half hours in the church and were amazed.
This cathedral also houses the chapel where Mass is still celebrated in the Mozarabic / Hispanic rite. It dates from the time of the Visigoth Kingdom. Every morning at 9:00 a.m. you can take part in this mass, which is sung very beautifully and whose rite differs in part from the Roman one in an interesting way. The chapel is only accessible during mass.

There is rarely more cathedral. Pictures of the greatest Spanish painters only here! It's just a pity that you can see the surrounding area and less Toledo itself from the tower.

The cathedral looks like a fortress and if you want to visit it from the inside, you have to pay an entrance fee. The waiting time can be considerable, especially on weekends. Tickets are available in a small shop opposite the main entrance.
There is a cloister that is free to visit.
