The Gothic and Mudéjar-style Church of San Juan Bautista in Vélez-Málaga was built in 1487 on the site of a medieval mosque. Throughout its history, it has undergone several renovations and structural changes. It was enlarged between 1541 and 1564, and its famous bell tower was added. It features three naves of six bays each, separated by six-pointed transverse arches. The central nave is the largest and contrasts in size with the other two. The other major restoration took place in the mid-19th century, during which Neoclassical features were added. The work was commissioned by Federico Vahey, Minister of Justice under Isabella II. It is a church of great architectural, historical, and artistic value.

Very nice route, but a small tip, take enough water with you. When we were there it was very hot. At one point, where there was still a little bit of water, at the small viaduct we met a fox. It took us 1 hour 43 minutes, with 2 small breaks.

At the highest point of the city of Vélez-Málaga is Alcazaba de Vélez - Málaga. It is a fortress of Arab origin, built in the 9th century. From this point we can enjoy the most emblematic view of the city.

The reservoir La Viñuela northeast of Málaga is a great and especially quiet hiking destination. Apart from shepherds, we hardly met anyone there. If it rains little in the summer / fall, the lake is very dry in December, so you can virtually wander where no one else is on foot. Attention: In the summer it can get extremely hot!
