In a brochure entitled "A Call for Peace, Because Peace Is Possible," Father Klaus Schäfer of the Pallottine Order (Societas Apostolatus Catholici), founded in the mid-19th century by Saint Vincent Pallotti, writes: "The large military cemeteries of the two World Wars, not only those located in France, clearly demonstrate that former enemies can become friends. After the two bloodbaths of these nations, there were no recriminations about who shot first, who was more guilty, who was more cruel... instead, there was a clean break and a genuine new beginning. For this reason, the large military cemeteries of the two World Wars are worthy of being declared World Heritage Sites. This is not to elevate war to the status of culture, but to show the world that even after such a bloody past, peace is possible. Europe has shown us: PEACE IS POSSIBLE. The castle ruins are quite large. Only the advanced structures of the important 13th-century castle remain today. The keep itself was destroyed in the 15th century.

This hiking hotspot combines history, nature and architecture. Château d'Armentières is a medieval castle nestled in a valley near the Ourcq River. The castle dates from the 13th or 14th century and was modified in the 16th century. It belonged to two great French families: the Juvénal des Ursins and the Conflans d'Armentières. You can admire the remains of the High Court, the Noble House, the Gate Tower and the Horseshoe Tower, as well as the surrounding landscape. The castle is privately owned, but you can tour the exterior with a guided tour. Tours are offered occasionally from April to October for individuals and all year round for groups. The Château d'Armentières is a privileged place to discover the heritage and beauty of the Omois region.

Since you don't often come across larger towns along the cycle path, Chateau-Thierry is a good place to take a break or to get provisions.
