As a memorial to the many dead, such a "MONUMENT AUX MORTS" (usually called a "Ehrenmal" or "Kriegerdenkmal" in German-speaking countries) remains very important to this day. "Now, Lord, you let your servant depart in peace, as you have said...", it says in the so-called "Hymn of Simeon" (Luke 2:29). However, the people commemorated here did not depart in peace, but became victims of war and tyranny. Therefore, the term "Gefallenen-Denkmal" (fallen memorial) is now sometimes used instead of the "Kriegerdenkmal" (war memorial), which was previously common in German. In the French-speaking world, however, this aspect of commemorating the dead has long been included in the more commonly used term "MONUMENT AUX MORTS." Regardless of language and nation, such a memorial has two important and perpetual tasks: -1- To keep alive the memory of the suffering and horrors of war, -2- and to remind people of the need for lasting peace.

Alsace has always been the scene of conflicts between the peoples of both sides of the Rhine. One of these, the Franco-Prussian War of 1870, has particularly marked the territory of Alsace Verte. From Wissembourg to Reichshoffen, which gave its name to one of the most important battles of this conflict, the battlefields are still visible today, marked by a very large number of monuments erected in honour of the men of the two camps who fell in battle. Testimony to the special fate of this border region. Inside the monument, a staircase leads up to the observation deck from which one has an overview of the entire battlefield of the Franco-Prussian War of 1870.
