We modern people are accustomed to the sight of skyscrapers in many cities and even the suburbs of large cities. Yet, we too often stand in awe before such a Gothic church, admiring the skyward-reaching spires of the cathedral, conceived and erected centuries ago. How much more must the people of the Middle Ages—at least the vast majority of the unprivileged—who mostly lived in simple huts rather than stone houses, have admired the master builders of their time?

The Seine in its entire width

This impressive monument was built in the 19th century and honors the life and martyrdom of Joan of Arc, the French heroine who led the army against the English during the Hundred Years' War. From the esplanade where the monument is located, you can admire the breathtaking view of the Seine valley and the city of Rouen. You can also discover the Notre-Dame de Bonsecours basilica, a neo-Gothic church adjacent to the monument. The monument is open to the public and free.

The Notre-Dame de Bonsecours basilica was built between 1840 and 1844 and is dedicated to the Virgin Mary, Help of Christians. Admire the ornate architecture, stained glass windows, and the monument to Joan of Arc that sits in front of the basilica. The basilica also offers a panoramic view of the Seine and the city of Rouen.
