When leaving (descending) Belcastel (about 1 km) don't miss the Lourdou near the river

Belcastel (“war castle”, from the Latin bellum and castellum) is a magnificent medieval village built on the banks of the Aveyron under an imposing castle. The village is now listed as one of the Most Beautiful Villages in France, with for example a magnificent bridge spanning the river since the 15th century.

Belcastel, as its name suggests, was a strategic point on the Aveyron, as evidenced by the remains of the Fort du Roc d'Anglars built in the 5th century on a spur overlooking the river a few hundred meters from the fortified village itself. .

In the heart of the Aveyron gorges, this picturesque stone bridge served a Gallo-Roman road linking Rodez to Cahors. Preserved natural setting. Hiking trail (GR 62 B).
