The Lieutenance is a historic building located at the entrance to the old harbor (Vieux Bassin). It is the only remaining part of the city's medieval fortifications. The building originally served as the residence of the Governor of Honfleur and later became the seat of the Lieutenant du Roi.

As soon as you arrive in the town, you will be greeted by the sight of picturesque houses with slate-covered facades stretching to the sky. The old boats rocking peacefully in the harbor tell of times gone by and the once bustling activity of this historic port city. A particular highlight is the old basin, commissioned by Colbert in the 17th century, which reflects the splendor of boat trips of that time. While you are here, be sure to take a detour to the quays, where the tall houses on Quai-Catherine form a fascinating contrast to the magnificent stone buildings on Quai Saint-Etienne. After your tour, you can end the evening comfortably in one of the numerous restaurants with a typical fish menu. The harbor offers a unique sight, especially in the evening, when the city lights dance on the water. Honfleur is a place that has managed to retain its authentic charm without degenerating into a mere tourist attraction.

In the 12th century, Robert IV Bertran († before 1194), Baron of Bricquebec, owned the domains of Roncheville, Fauguernon, Fontenay-le-Marmion as well as half of the city and port of Honfleur and, on the other side of the English Channel, the domain of Bard (Essex))1. At the end of the Hundred Years' War, Charles VII made the Roncheville manor the residence of the governors of Honfleur: Robert de Floques from 1450 to 1461, Jean de Montauban in 1461, Louis de Bourbon from 1470 to 1486.

The lieutenancy is so called because this building was assigned to the King's lieutenant. This function was held in Honfleur from 1684 until the French Revolution, for a little over 100 years. It successively became a customs office and a commercial court. In 1974, the port captaincy took possession of the premises. In 2015 major renovations took place. It is the city which now owns this emblematic place of Honfleur. The Lieutenancy can be visited.
