A "treidelpfad" (towpath) that runs alongside the river or canal's bed was an essential part of the transport infrastructure in earlier times. Before ships could be powered by motors, horses walked along the bank, pulling the boat against the current. This was called "treideln" (towing), and this is how the towpaths got their name, which has been passed down to this day. Where these paths, located directly along the bank, have been preserved, they are popular with hikers and cyclists.

Unfortunately it was closed - we looked inside - and we would have liked to eat here. It is closed between 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. It is open until 1 p.m. on Saturdays and until 12.30 p.m. on Sundays. If it is closed here you can try it on the canal at "La Halte Nautique" - we went there to eat. It was OK!

There are quite a few of these steel bridges - the company Magnard & Cie. obviously received a large order at the time. The bridges were manufactured in Fourchambault - 7 km from Nevers, directly on the Loire.

The cycle path along the canal is well developed and very easy to ride. It is quiet and not very crowded.
