The Hanseatic city of Wismar (Low German: Wismer) is located on the Baltic Sea coast in the Nordwestmecklenburg district of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, at the southern end of the Bay of Wismar, protected by the island of Poel. It is the sixth-largest city in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and the largest of the state's 18 medium-sized towns. The historic old towns of Stralsund and Wismar were added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in June 2002.

The house is a two-storey half-timbered building with two bay windows on the west side facing the harbour and on the east side. It stands on two barrel-vaulted bridges that give the building its name. The Runde Grube river flows beneath the building and shortly afterwards flows into the Old Harbour. Directly west of the vault, the street Am Hafen bridges the Grube.
