The nunnery that moved into Sonnenkamp came from the branch in Parkow. The Marienkloster in Bergen on Rügen had also been intended as the mother house, but the Benedictine convent in Arendsee in the Altmark was a more likely candidate, since Adelheid, the second wife of Prince Borwin I, was a princess from the Mark Brandenburg who, through good relations with the Arendsee monastery, brought the first Benedictine nuns to Mecklenburg. After 1245, the convent adopted the Cistercian rule, which was probably due to the influence of the powerful Cistercian abbey of Doberan. In a letter of protection from Pope Clement IV dated May 26, 1267,[6] a Cistercian monastery was first mentioned as Cysterciensis ordinis, and the monastery was governed by a prioress and followed the rules of Saint Benedict according to the customs of the Cistercian brothers….

The former Cistercian monastery has the most beautiful name and is the oldest church. The monastery was a second foundation by Heinrich Borwin I. The original site was Parchow near Neubukow. The monastery was rebuilt and finally established in 1249. Initially a Benedictine monastery, it became Cistercian in 1249.

The Groß Kessin Church belongs to the group of larger, mostly vaulted brick village churches in the greater Wismar area, such as Zurow, Proseken, and Hohenkirchen. It is a single-nave, elongated church building from the first half of the 13th century with five bays and a five-eighths end in the chancel. The tower, dating from 1741, is a brick-walled wooden tower, a rare feature in the region. With its squat spire, the church makes a defensive impression and is reminiscent of Luther's hymn "A Mighty Fortress Is Our God..."

The old Alt Karin estate, first documented in 1233 as "Curin," with its park and the church in the village center, testify to Alt Karin's importance as a former manor house. In particular, the family of the last landowner, Count von Bernstorff, significantly shaped the village and its surroundings, including the creation of Alt Karin Lake and the chestnut tree avenue, through large-scale reforestation. The Alt Karin Church is early Gothic, built of brick, and the choir and single-nave nave are covered with a cross-ribbed vault. The interior features a gallery surrounding the western part and three raised royal seats or galleries.
