We visited the castle in July 2025, the moat is empty and it all locked up but unoccupied. Its worth having a look at because you can get a good view through the front fence and gate.

A castle-palace of the Dukes of Anjou in the 19th and 19th centuries, the Château de Saumur, where King René resided, is the last example of the princely palaces built by the Valois dynasty. It served as the residence of the city's governors, a prison, and later an arms and ammunition depot. It was purchased by the city in 1906 to house the municipal museum, now the Musée de France. Today, we discover the rich collections scattered throughout the former apartments of the Dukes of Anjou in an educational museography. Want to know more? The castle is definitely worth seeing, especially with children. The Tolkien exhibition, well, and perhaps the 150 Stirrups aren't something you need to see. But the knights' armour, the furnished rooms and the castle itself are interesting for small children. In 1-1.5 hours you can see everything for free, adults 8 euros.
