Saumur castle was built from the 10th century on Renaissance and Medieval styles. The visit includes the interior of the castle, artistic collections as well as the gardens and the belvedere which offers an exceptional view of the city of Saumur.

Built on its rock, the castle can be seen from afar for you. The municipal museum in the castle holds a number of exhibits of local objects ready for you.

Opening hours:
From 1st April to 14th June and from 16th September to 5th November from 10am to 1pm and from 2pm to 5.30pm.
From 15 June to 15 September from 10:00 to 18:30.
From 7.-12. Open from tuesday to sunday from 2pm to 5.30pm from the 23rd of December until the 7th of January.

Castle-palace of the Dukes of Anjou in the 1906th and 1906th centuries, the Château de Saumur, where King René stayed, is the last example of the princely palaces built by the Valois dynasty. Residence of the governors of the city, prison and then arms and ammunition depot. It was bought by the city in 1906 to house the municipal museum, now the Musée de France. Today, we discover the rich collections spread out in the former apartments of the Dukes of Anjou in an educational museography.

This is a "pity" of the must-sees!
On paper, of course, Saumur + Château is the winning combo... Be careful! In reality, wasted time and a great disappointment. A very beautiful castle, it's true, but empty: empty of soul, empty of intelligence, empty of history.
The castle has been transformed into an exhibition space by the city, which clearly doesn't know what a good exhibition curator is supposed to do, so it's making the summer intern work, who this year had just finished all of Tolkien and said to himself: "Hey, Tolkien is still the Middle Ages, Gandalf was a friend of King Arthur, if we exhibited tapestries that talk about Middle Earth!"
A false good idea, and suddenly a must-see (because hey, it's still a beautiful castle) to bypass. It'll be quick, it's not that big!

The castle is definitely worth seeing, especially with children. The Tolkien exhibition, well, and perhaps the 150 Stirrups aren't something you need to see. But the knights' armour, the furnished rooms and the castle itself are interesting for small children. In 1-1.5 hours you can see everything for free, adults 8 euros.
